History of Sreeganesh Kalasamithy
Sreeganesh Kalasamithy was founded on 9th March, 1958 at Kannanchery by giving a new sense of direction in Art and Cultural field, and was inaugurated by Sri. P. Sreedharan who was the Municipal Councilor at that time. Kalasamithy aimed the cultural inhibition of peoples in Kannanchery who had adopted weaving as their main occupation. Initially Sreeganesh Kalasamithy was started in a small rented building and after 22 years Kalasamithy moved into its own building.
Aiming at self-job, computer training with concessional rate, tailoring training etc. are being conducted with the help of Govt. Agencies. Besides, Kalasamithy is conducting free medical camps, Self-awareness programs, distribution of rice and clothes for poor families etc. For this, Kalasamithy has got contributions of many faculties from different regions of the society, who became the part of Kalasamithy.
Former Prime Minister Sri. A.B. Vajpayee, famous Musician V. Dakshinamurthy, poet N.N. Kakkad, Drama legend Thikkodiyan, film personalities viz., Cochin Haneef, Augustine, Mamukoya, Sudheesh, Manikuttan, writer P.R. Nathan, Musicians Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri, Kaithapram Viswanathan Namboodiri, play back singers Jassie Gift, Ganga, R. Kanakambaran (RK) from All India Radio, Artist Francis Kodankandath, Madanan, Gopikrishnan, Paul Kallanode, B.M. Gafoor, Sudheer Kadalundi, former Union Ministers O. Rajagopal, IAS Officer T.O Sooraj, Balakiran etc have given leadership for different cultural activities conducted by Sreeganesh Kalasamithy.
Sreeganesh Kalasamithy was registered under society Act on 1973 and made affiliation with Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Kerala State Yuvajanakshema Board and through these, Kalasamithy could done many socio-cultural developmental activities. Sreeganesh Vidya Nikethan, Vivekananda Study Centre, Library etc are now working under Sreeganesh Kalasamithy. Besides, about 300 students are studying In different classes here.
Kannanchery has hosted the artistes from Assam, Manipur, Nagaland etc who had visited Kerala as a part of Inter State Youth Exchange programme by Union Govt. Kalasamithy always encourage amateur dramas and are presenting amateur drama during annual day celebrations. Thus the dram entitled, “Jeevitham” has received Gold Medal. Kalasamithy has received so many awards including the Best Cultural club issued by Nehru Yuva Kendra.
Since its early days, we dedicate tributes for the Mahatmas who were with us from its our socio-artistic-cultural journey. We convey our sincere gratitude to all the natives and well wishers who have given all co-operation and efforts to make the Kalasamithy a great cultural samithy of Kozhikode Dist.
